Fenerbahce vs Panathinaikos Preview

The stage is set in Abu Dhabi as the EuroLeague Final Four makes history with its first-ever edition in the UAE.

Fenerbahce stand at the gates, ready to challenge the throne. But can they dethrone the kings, or will Panathinaikos tighten their grip on glory and march toward another title run?

Fenerbahce Form & Team News

Fenerbahce had an excellent regular season in the EuroLeague, finishing second in the standings with 23 wins and 10 losses.

In the quarterfinal series against Paris, they didn’t allow any surprises and won 3-0, becoming the first team to secure a spot at the Final Four.

This is the first full season for coach Sarunas Jasikevicius on the Fenerbahce bench, during which he fully implemented his system and, as usual, led the team to the final tournament.

Between the last game against Paris and the Final Four, Fenerbahce experienced a slight and perhaps expected dip in form, which resulted in two relatively unimportant losses in the domestic league. However, just before this game, they crushed their big rivals Galatasaray 94-70 on home court.

Jasikevicius evenly distributed playing time among his players, minimizing the risk of injuries ahead of the most important game of the season.

Panathinaikos Form & Team News

Panathinaikos, along with their biggest rivals Olympiacos, is considered one of the main favorites heading into the upcoming Final Four.

According to the latest reports, the team’s starting center Mathias Lessort might be available for the tournament, which would significantly boost the Greens’ chances of defending their title.

It wouldn’t be surprising if coach Ataman decides to put him on the floor from the very first minute of the semifinal.

The Athens club managed to survive a grueling five-game quarterfinal series against Anadolu Efes, and in the meantime, they also comfortably secured a spot in the domestic league final. The team is in high spirits, and within the club, nothing less than an eighth EuroLeague title is expected.

It’s been known for a while that Marius Grigonis won’t be available for this tournament, as he ended his season early due to a persistent back injury.

Head to Head

Panathinaikos won both head-to-head games against Fenerbahce this season. In Istanbul, they came out on top 81–76, while the game in Athens ended 91–90 — both matchups were decided by narrow margins.

Verdict

This semifinal will be a rematch of last season’s Final Four clash in Berlin, where Panathinaikos cruised to a 73–57 win.

Fenerbahce struggled heavily in that game, but this time around, expectations are much higher for a more competitive matchup.

The general feeling is that both teams have improved since then and are ready to showcase their full offensive potential.
