Manchester United vs Lyon Preview & Tips

Despite a woeful season, Manchester United could still end their 2024/25 campaign with a major piece of silverware as they head into their Europa League quarter-final second-leg with Lyon with the tie level at 2-2.

Manchester United Form

Despite seeing their one-goal lead disappear late in their clash with Lyon due to another Onana-howler, Manchester United left France having secured a positive result.

A 2-2 draw away from home saw the English side ensure they are level heading into the home-leg of their tie. Positively, United secured a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad in Spain in the last round before romping to a 4-1 win at Old Trafford in the second-leg.

The major worry for United will be that they have struggled to keep the opposition out of late, conceding in their last three in Europe. They were also completely outplayed by Newcastle in a 4-1 loss in the league at the weekend. I do not back the home side to keep a clean sheet when judging them on recent results.

Lyon Form

Lyon will have been disappointed not to have made more of going 1-0 up against Manchester United in the first-leg of their clash as they were forced to snatch a 2-2 draw on their own patch.

While Lyon did take 16 total shots, only five hit the target. They were also given a major helping hand by United’s goalkeeper, with Onana handing the French side two goals. Had it not been for Onana’s woeful goalkeeping, Lyon may have been behind heading into the second-leg.

Lyon have scored in each of their last four in Europe, and I back them to breach the leaky defence of their hosts. However, beating United at Old Trafford in Europe has proved tough this season, and I predict that the French side will be yet another team the English underachievers eliminate.
