Newcastle slipped to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal as they saw their hopes of snaring a Champions League spot take a blow.

Everton beat Southampton 2-0 in their last outing at Goodison Park, with the Toffees making it two successive wins in the league.

Newcastle have won five of their last 10 against Everton, with the Toffees winning twice and three ending as draws.

Newcastle could not secure a place in the Champions League last weekend as they slipped to a 1-0 loss against Arsenal. Admittedly, winning at the Emirates Stadium is never a given, but the Magpies would have been confident on the back of a strong 2-0 win over Chelsea the game before.

Despite this defeat, Newcastle still have their fate in their own hands. Sitting in fourth on 66 points, the Magpies are ahead of Chelsea in fifth and Aston Villa in sixth via their goal difference. A win in this one could see Newcastle finish as high as third if results go their way.

While a third placed finish would be a major achievement, all Eddie Howe’s men will care about is securing a Champions League spot. While Everton are always a tough nut to crack, I expect any side hunting the Champions League to beat a side sitting in 13th on their own patch.

Everton Form

Everton have enjoyed a solid second half of the season, with the Toffees almost doubling the points haul of 18th placed Leicester.

They arrive for their final game of the season on the back of a three game unbeaten run that features two wins. Most important was their 2-0 win over Southampton in their last match, with this seeing the Toffees end their tenure at Goodison Park with a win.

It remains to be seen whether their last game at Goodison Park will almost act as their final big performance of the season. With little to play for as they will finish in 13th in the league regardless of the result, I predict that they will struggle to get going at St James’ Park.

I am backing Newcastle to secure their fourth consecutive win to nil at home as they ensure they will have a seat at Europe’s top table next year.
