OKC Thunder at Indiana Pacers Game 6 Preview

After a 120–109 win in Game 5, the Oklahoma City Thunder are now just one step away from capturing their first title since adopting the Thunder name.

Can the Pacers bounce back and force a decisive Game 7, or will the Thunder finish the job and lift the trophy?

Indiana Pacers Form & Team News

The Pacers were far from their best in Game 5 of the NBA Finals and ultimately suffered a well-deserved loss.

Now facing elimination, they’re in a difficult position — with no margin for error in the next two games if they hope to claim the championship. But even more concerning than the result is the condition of their star player, Tyrese Haliburton.

The point guard reaggravated his right calf injury early in the first quarter. Despite the setback, he stayed on the court and played 34 minutes, but clearly wasn’t himself. He missed all six of his shot attempts and turned the ball over three times.

If this weren’t the Finals, Haliburton would almost certainly be sidelined for a while. However, both he and the medical staff are doing everything possible to manage the injury and get him ready for the next game.

In his absence, Pascal Siakam led the Pacers in scoring with 28 points, while T.J. McConnell delivered a strong performance off the bench with 18. If Haliburton is unable to go in Game 6, McConnell is expected to see an expanded role.

Just like in their series against the Denver Nuggets, the Thunder have once again managed to flip the momentum after trailing 2–1. The question now is whether they’ll need a Game 7 this time as well, or if they’ll close out the series and celebrate the championship in front of a hostile crowd.

In Game 5, Oklahoma City left no doubt. From the opening tip, they played their game — dictating the pace, applying pressure, and forcing the Pacers into mistakes.

Jalen Williams rose to the occasion and delivered what was arguably the best performance of his young career. The reliable guard exploded for 40 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists on an efficient 14-of-25 shooting from the field.

As usual, league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was rock-solid, recording a double-double with 31 points and 10 assists. Solid contributions also came from the bench, with Aaron Wiggins adding 14 points and Cason Wallace chipping in 11.

Head to Head

This will be the eighth meeting between these two teams this season. The Thunder have won five of the previous seven, with an average margin of victory of 12 points.

Verdict

The Pacers find themselves in an almost hopeless position. While their game is built around team play, Tyrese Haliburton is the engine that makes everything run. Even if he suits up for the upcoming game, it’s unclear how effective he’ll be or how much he can really help his teammates.

It’s hard to see a realistic path for Rick Carlisle’s team to pull off a win and send the series back to Oklahoma.
