Olympiacos vs Monaco Final Four Preview

Just one hour after the first semifinal wraps up, Olympiacos and Monaco will battle it out on the court.

Will Olympiacos, the regular season’s top seed, prove why they’re favorites, or will Vassilis Spanoulis pull off a stunning surprise against his old team?

Olympiacos Form & Team News

Near the end of the EuroLeague regular season, Olympiacos showed some signs of weakness but managed to hold on to first place, where they spent most of the season.

In the quarterfinal series against Real Madrid, they also struggled at times, especially in the away games three and four. It’s clear they are under immense pressure to win this title, which has eluded them for 12 years.

This year’s team is heavily invested in, with at least two quality players at every position. Like their biggest rival Panathinaikos, anything less than winning the championship would be seen as a failure.

In recent weeks, Olympiacos played the Greek league semifinals, sweeping the series 2–0 to reach the final. After some difficulties in the first game, they dominated AEK 90–64 in the second, led by their star Sasha Vezenkov, who posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Evan Fournier, Kostas Papanikolaou, Nigel Williams-Goss, and Luca Vildoza missed that game due to minor injuries, but all are expected to be ready for Friday’s match.

Monaco Form & Team News

Monaco are seen as underdogs at the Final Four, but this wouldn’t be the first time a team with low expectations has won the title.

They reached the Final Four after a dramatic quarterfinal series against Barcelona. After two easy wins at home, Barcelona fought back to even the series in Monaco. The decisive Game 5 was full of intense battle and drama, with Monaco surviving thanks to Kevin Punter’s last-second shot that kept them alive.

The Final Four is where Vassilis Spanoulis has always shined during his playing career, and if history has taught us anything, it’s that you can never count out a legend of Greek and European basketball.

At this tournament, Spanoulis, like his counterpart Sarunas Jasikevicius, will try to become only the fourth person ever to win the top club trophy both as a player and as a head coach. The good news for him is that he will have the whole team ready for the game.

Head to Head

Monaco are one of only four clubs to beat Piraeus this season. That win came in their last meeting, played just under two months ago.

Verdict

Since lifting the EuroLeague trophy in 2013, Olympiacos have returned to the Final Four four times—only to have heartbreak knock on their door in three nail-biting finals.

The weight of expectation hangs heavily over them now, but I believe this team carries the fire and grit to break the curse. On Friday, they’ll have a chance to rewrite their story and prove why they belong at the very top of European basketball.
