Olympiacos vs Panathinaikos Preview

Despite high expectations and big investments, both Greek teams have come up short this season.

What many hoped would be an epic EuroLeague final between them has instead turned into a fight for third place — a tough reality as their players get ready to battle it out on Friday for the bronze.

Olympiacos Form & Team News

Olympiacos couldn’t break the curse. Once again, the team that finished first in the regular season will fall short of winning the title.

In the semifinal, they delivered one of their worst performances of the year. Credit goes to Monaco and their coaching staff for putting together an excellent game plan, but the Greek side also played well below expectations.

Of all their players, only Evan Fournier rose to the occasion—and more than that. The rest ranged from average to outright disappointing. The French international, with his vast NBA experience, was outstanding, finishing with 31 points on 10-of-18 shooting. He tried to keep his team in the game when Monaco pulled ahead by double digits, but his teammates failed to step up.

Former league MVP Sasha Vezenkov had a night to forget, hitting just 2 of his 10 shot attempts. Despite a strong season overall, this may be the game most remembered when people look back on his 2024 campaign.

Panathinaikos Form & Team News

Panathinaikos also failed to clear the first hurdle at this year’s Final Four in their attempt to defend the EuroLeague crown.

They were beaten by Fenerbahce, 82–76, in a game where the Turkish side controlled the scoreboard from start to finish and fully deserved their spot in the final.

Cedi Osman knocked down shots from all over the floor and finished with 22 points, while Kendrick Nunn added 19. However, the American guard looked frustrated throughout and fouled out early in the second half.

Jerian Grant was his usual reliable self on the big stage, contributing 15 points—rounding out the trio of double-digit scorers for Panathinaikos.

Mathias Lessort returned to action after five months out with a serious injury and scored 7 points, but it was clear he wasn’t at his best yet, logging just 14 minutes on the court.

Team captain Kostas Sloukas had a night to forget. The veteran, who holds the record with 13 Final Four appearances, managed just 3 points and had little impact on the game.

Head to Head

This will be the seventh meeting between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos this season, with the current head-to-head tied at 3–3. And it won’t be the last—these two rivals are set to face off again in the Greek League finals, which tip off next week.

Verdict

It’s clear that neither team will be truly motivated for this game, and the long-standing question remains—why is there even a third-place game at the Final Four?

Sure, beating your biggest rival always feels good, but it won’t come close to the satisfaction of facing them in a championship game. I expect both teams to be somewhat reserved on the defensive end, which could lead to a high-scoring affair.
