Jones puts his heavyweight title on the line as he faces Stipe, and Chandler gets a chance to even the score in a rematch with Charles Oliveira. Here are the betting odds and our predictions for these fights.

UFC 309 - When and Where?

It’s November, and all UFC fans know what that means - we’re heading to New York City and the iconic Madison Square Garden for UFC 309, which is set to take place on the 16th with the main (PPV) card kicking off at 8PM Eastern Time.

Since the UFC made its debut at MSG in 2016, it has returned every November, with the only exception being in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This venue has provided some historic fights, including McGregor becoming the first fighter to hold two belts simultaneously. This is a recap of the MSG main events that Jones and Miocic will be added to.

Jones vs Miocic

Despite Jon ‘Bones’ Jones not being that active in recent years, he is still thought of as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the UFC.

In his prime, Jones ripped apart the light heavyweight division, with significant wins over Maurício Rua, Quinton Jackson, Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, and Daniel Cormier on his resume.

His well-documented personal issues and drug suspensions have fragmented his legacy, and an argument with Dana White over pay for a super fight with Francis Ngannou kept him away from the sport for multiple years.

However, Jones returned in March 2023 to challenge Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight championship. This was his first official fight at heavyweight, but Bones wasted no time in getting rid of Gane, who he finished with a guillotine choke in the first round.

Following that win, Jones was scheduled to originally fight Stipe a year ago at UFC 295, but a tear in his pectoral tendon forced him to pull out.

Miocic beat Joey Beltran on his UFC debut in 2011. Despite a couple of losses along the way, he fought and beat Fabrício Werdum for the UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 198 in 2016.

He defended the strap three times before dropping it to Daniel ‘DC’ Cormier. However, he won it back in their first rematch and went on to defend it against DC again before losing to Francis Ngannou.

The Ngannou fight, which was at UFC 260 on 27 March 2021, was the last time Stipe fought in the octagon. Add to the expected ring rust; he is now 42 years old.

Many experts believe interim title holder Tom Aspinall should be the man standing opposite Jones at UFC 309, but Stipe has been given this title shot and lucrative payday based on what he has given the sport and his loyalty to the UFC.

Betting Odds and Prediction

Stake has released its lines for this fight, and Jon ‘Bones’ Jones is the overwhelming favorite. He’s priced at 1.15 (European Decimal), which is one of the shortest prices I have come across for a title fight.

Although there is not much betting value for customers, I think Stake is right. Jones should do away with Miocic easily. My prediction is a KO/TKO in the first or second round.

Oliveira vs Chandler

The co-main event welcomes back another fighter who we haven’t seen in the cage for a few years. Michael Chandler waited and waited for his dream fight with Conor McGregor, but that never happened, so he now returns for a rematch with Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira.

These two first fought for the vacant lightweight title at UFC 262 in May 2021. Oliveira won that fight, and he went on to defend the title against Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje before dropping it to Islam Makhachev at UFC 280.

Charles returned from that loss with a convincing win over Beneil Dariush but then lost a title eliminator fight against Arman Tsarukyan. On the other side, Chandler has only fought three times since the Oliveira bout, and two of those were losses, with his only victory coming against Tony Ferguson.

With both fighters in the twilight of their careers (Chandler 38 and Oliveira 35), they may not get another run at the belt, but this is still a match-up that people want to see.

Betting Odds and Prediction

The current betting odds are Oliveira 1.40 and Chandler 3.00. I sense there’s a bit of value here for Michael. While most UFC pundits believe Do Bronx will win again, I am not convinced.

Charles has been in some big fights, and these take their toll. Added to that, Chandler hurt Oliveira in their first fight but didn’t take the opportunity to finish him off. If Iron Michael can control his gas tank, I think he has a strong chance of winning.
