Australia vs Japan Preview & Tips

Australia were able to beat China 2-0 in the last round of qualifying as they secured a second consecutive win.

Japan were held by Saudi Arabia in a frustrating 0-0 draw that saw their three-game winning run brought to an end.

  • Japan have won three of their last four against Australia (D1)
  • Japan have won all four of their away games in qualifying

Head To Head

Japan have won six of their last 10 against Australia, with the other four games ending as draws.

Australia Form

Australia began the current stage of World Cup Qualifying in questionable form as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Bahrain before being held in a 0-0 draw by Indonesia.

They were able to bounce back with a 3-1 win over China, but three consecutive draws saw their campaign stall once again. However, wins over Indonesia (5-1) and China (2-0) has ultimately seen Australia take control of second in the group, three points clear of Saudi Arabia in third.

Victory in this game would see them tighten their grip on second, while it would further underline their ability to beat the best in qualifying. However, having lost three of their last four against Japan, I am not backing the home side to get the win that would make it three consecutive victories.

Japan Form

Japan have been outstanding in World Cup Qualifying, with the side unbeaten after their opening eight matches.

Six victories have come alongside two draws, while they have also kept clean sheets in six of their outings. With 20 points from a possible 24, Japan will finish at the summit whether they lose their next two games or not. However, such has been their form, I cannot see them looking to take it easy in this one.

While Australia took a point from Japan when the latter hosted the former back in November, I do not see the travelling side dropping points in this one. Instead, I am backing Japan to make it five consecutive wins in qualifying.

Verdict

I am backing Japan to notch their seventh win in nine qualifying matches as they move further clear at the summit.
