Fenerbahce vs Besiktas Game 2 Preview

Fenerbahce made light work of Game 1 with a 94–76 win, taking a solid step toward defending their Turkish league crown.

But will they keep the momentum rolling in Game 2, or can Besiktas shake things up, snatch a road win, and bring the series back to life?

Fenerbahce Form & Team News

The reigning European champions had little trouble living up to their favorite status in Game 1 of the finals series. Sarunas Jasikevicius’s team delivered a dominant performance against arch-rivals Besiktas.

After taking the lead midway through the first quarter, they never looked back. The gap kept growing from quarter to quarter, reaching a maximum of 24 points early in the final period.

That comfortable margin even allowed the home coach the luxury of giving minutes to some younger domestic players who hadn’t seen much action this season.

Scoring was well-distributed across the Fenerbahce roster. Khem Birch led the way with 15 points on perfect shooting from the field. He was followed by Wade Baldwin with 14, Metecan Birsen with 13, and Erick McCollum who added 12.

Nigel Hayes-Davis and Marko Guduric scored just 7 points each, but given the nature of the game, there was simply no need for them to step up offensively.

Besiktas Form & Team News

Besiktas never really stood a chance of pulling off an upset in Game 1 — they went down without much of a fight.

Such a poor showing might not come as a huge surprise, considering they had just come off a grueling five-game series against Anadolu Efes. Fenerbahce, on the other hand, had the benefit of five extra days to rest and prepare.

Dusan Alimpijevic tried everything he could to spark some energy in his team, but there was simply no response. The only bright spot was veteran Derek Needham, who kept the game close during his 25 minutes on the court. However, foul trouble forced him to spend more time on the bench than desired.

Top scorer Jonah Mathews had a night to forget, hitting just 4 of his 15 shots from the field. The rest of the international crew didn't fare much better — Kyle Allman went 1-of-7, Conor Morgan shot 3-of-8, and Dustin Sleva managed just 2-of-6.

Head to Head

Fenerbahce already got the better of Besiktas once this season, beating them in the Turkish Cup final. Now, they’re aiming for their third trophy of the season in this championship series.

Verdict

Besiktas completely misfired in Game 1 and will need to be much more efficient from the field if they want to put up a more competitive performance in the upcoming matchup.

At the same time, the Fenerbahce players clearly have more to offer, so I’m expecting another offensively strong and high-scoring game from them.
