Melbourne City vs Melbourne Victory Preview & Tips

Melbourne City did what they needed to do against Western United in the last round as a 1-1 draw in the second-leg saw them secure a 4-1 aggregate triumph.

Melbourne Victory secured one of the results of the season as they beat Auckland FC on the road to notch a stunning 2-1 aggregate win.

  • The last two meetings between the sides have ended in draws
  • Both sides have scored in their last five meetings

Head To Head

Five of the last 10 meetings between the sides have ended in draws after 90 minutes, with City winning twice and Victory winning three times.

Melbourne City Form

Melbourne City arrive for the Grand Final as the higher rated side after securing 48 points from their 26 games, with this enough to see them finish in second, five short of Auckland FC at the summit.

Despite failing to top the ladder, City took their place in the Grand Final as Auckland FC were knocked out by their next opponents. Meanwhile, City secured a comfortable 4-1 win over Western United that came largely thanks to a brilliant 3-0 win on the road in the first-leg.

While City will be confident they can secure the trophy this season, they have not been great against Victory of late. Positively for City, neither side has been able to dominate encounters between the pair. Goals have generally been the order of the day when they play, and ending all square in matches has been very common, and I back this one to got to extra-time.

Melbourne Victory Form

Despite ending the season in fifth on the ladder, Melbourne Victory now find themselves a single win away from securing the trophy following the Grand Final.

Not daunted by a clash with minor premier winners Auckland FC, Melbourne Victory were able to bounce back from their 1-0 loss to their opponents by securing a superb 2-0 win on the road. This win will have Victory incredibly confident that they can beat their opponents, although they will have to end a run of two consecutive stalemates against their rivals.

While I back Victory to get on the scoresheet in the final, I predict that they will struggle to separate themselves from their opponents. The two have trundled to three draws in 90 minutes across their last four, and I back more of the same in this one.

Verdict

I predict another draw between the two sides as the final is sent into extra time as both goalkeepers are forced to pick the ball out of their own net.
