Not to be deterred, Drake bet $500,000 on Adesanya to win by KO against Sean Strictland at UFC 293. The curse struck again as Strickland won on points after a dominant display.

Now, with Strickland as the UFC middleweight champion, his first challenger was the tough South African Dricus du Plessis. The bookmakers still had Strickland as a slight favorite, and perhaps this was enough to convince Drake to back him.

The singer laid down $700,000 on Strickland to win (by KO, TKO, submission, or on points). With odds of 1.97, Drake stood to win $1,379,000 had the champ retained his title.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. After a five-round war, Dricus du Plessis got the nod, with two of the three judges scoring it in his favor, 48 - 47.

It should be noted that the infamous ‘Drake Curse’ stretches beyond the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He put a $1 million bet on Argentina to win the FIFA World Cup final in normal time. Of course, Messi’s boys did win, but it was on penalties, so Drake didn’t get a payout.
